A Colorado State Patrol sergeant responding to a single-vehicle crash on Thanksgiving Day in Gunnison County shot and killed a man who brandished a firearm during the incident, authorities said.

Sgt. Joshua Boden, who has been with the patrol since 2005, has been placed on administrative leave, per patrol policy, as the shooting is investigated.

At about 4 p.m. Thursday Boden was called to Colorado 135 for a single-vehicle crash. When Boden arrived Patrick Michael Langhoff, 59, “brandished a firearm” and was shot by Boden, according to a Colorado Bureau of Investigation news release. Langhoff died at the scene.

The 7th Judicial Critical Incident Investigative Team is investigating the shooting.
