An immature Bald Eagle flies along I-70 after feeding on the carcass of a dead elk on Feb. 21, 2022 near Rifle. Immature Bald Eagles are often mistaken for Golden Eagles. Goldens have a golden-brown head even when immature whereas immature Bald Eagles have more of the white mottling seen on this bird. Juvenile Bald Eagles have a brown body with brown and white mottled wings. The tail is also mottled with a dark band at the tip. They donÕt develop their distinctive white head and white tail feathers until they are around 5 to 5 1/2 years. From Ron DudleyÕs blog entitled Feathered Photography: Raptors, including eagles,Êthat have not reached the adult plumageÊstage are referred to asÊimmature.ÊThose in their first plumage stage are calledÊjuvenilesÊand the termÊsub-adultÊis used to refer to any plumage stage between juvenile and adult.ÊDepending on molt sequence, age and timing plumage stages are highly variableÊso other factors likeÊiris and beak color areÊalso taken into account when estimating age. Eyes gradually change from dark brown to yellowÊwhile theÊbeak goes from blackish-gray to yellow as they mature.
