Aurora police fatally shoot man while responding to a fight in a parking lot

The man was carrying an an assault-style firearm, police said

Aurora police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man by officers responding to a fight in a parking lot Thursday afternoon.

The fight, in a parking lot in the 11900 block of East 16th Avenue, involved a man “armed with an assault-style long gun,” .ʴDZ  that the man struck by gunfire was taken to a hospital, where he died.

No officers were injured in the shooting, Aurora police said.

According to a press release issued Thursday evening, someone called 911 shortly before 2 p.m. to report a fight between two men in the parking lot. As officers responded to the scene, a second call came in both reporting the fight and the fact that one of the men in the fight had a long gun, according to the release.

When officers arrived, they confronted the armed man and gave him multiple commands to drop his weapon. The man didn’t comply with the orders, the release said, triggering the shooting by one officer.

“Officers immediately performed lifesaving actions on the suspect until medical responders arrived at the scene,” the press release said.

The man who was killed will be identified by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.

The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is on scene conducting its preliminary investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Aurora Police Department will run a parallel probe into the shooting.
