The forecasted an extreme impact storm on Friday and into Saturday across south-central and southeastern Colorado with heavy, wet snow and high winds expected. Travel conditions in some areas were expected to be difficult if not impossible. A travel warning covered Interstate 70 east of Denver and I-25 south of Pueblo.
“Do not go out unless you really have to,” Trooper Sherri Mendez “If you do have to go out, drive really slow and cautiously.”
Heavy snow was anticipated along I-25 on Monument Hill and along I-70 west of Denver to the Idaho Springs area Friday evening into Saturday morning.
CDOT on Thursday at 5 p.m. included:
- I-25 southbound from Pueblo to the New Mexico state line,
- I-70 eastbound from the DIA area to the Kansas state line,
- I-70 westbound between Kansas and Limon,
- U.S. 40 between Limon and Kit Carson,
- U.S. 40 westbound from Cheyenne Wells to Kit Carson,
- U.S. 160 between Colorado 350 and Colorado 389,
- U.S. 350 between Trinidad and La Junta,
- Colorado 59 between Haxtun and Kit Carson,
- Colorado 71 between Last Chance and Punkin Center,
- Colorado 86 between Kiowa and I-70,
- Colorado 94 between the El Paso County line and U.S. 40/287,
- Colorado 109 between La Junta and Kim, and
- Colorado 389 between the New Mexico state line and U.S. 160.
E-470 authorities reported a multi-vehicle crash shortly before 11 a.m. near the intersection of E-470 and northbound US 85.
CDOT closed southbound Interstate 25 south of Pueblo, from mile marker 91 to the New Mexico state line, starting at 10:35 a.m. Only local traffic — Colorado City, Rye, and Walsenburg residents — is allowed to proceed to those locations on I-25, CDOT officials said. I-25 was closed indefinitely.
